Choosing the right substrate is one of the most important decisions in fine art printing. The paper or canvas you choose affects colour reproduction, texture, perceived value, and longevity. Yet most artists and photographers make this decision based on habit rather than deliberate choice.

The two broadest categories are cotton-based papers and canvas. Cotton rag papers — like Hahnemühle Photo Rag or Canson Infinity — are made from 100% cotton fibres, giving them a soft, smooth surface ideal for photography and illustration. Canvas, on the other hand, has a woven texture that adds dimensionality and a painterly quality to any image.

For photography, baryta (silver fibre) paper is the closest modern equivalent to darkroom prints. The barium sulphate coating gives it a semi-gloss surface with exceptional tonal range — particularly in the shadows and highlights. If you print B&W photography, baryta is almost always the right choice.

For illustration and fine art reproductions, cotton rag at 300–400gsm is the archival gold standard. The matte surface enhances detail and line work, and the cotton fibres are acid-free and chemically stable — archival ratings of 100+ years are common.

For paintings — particularly oil and acrylic — canvas is the obvious choice, but there are subtleties. A canvas with a heavier weight (320–400gsm) and a finer weave will produce more faithful reproductions. We also offer a gesso base option that further mimics the look of a painted original.

When in doubt, schedule a consultation. Our print specialists will walk you through the substrates, show you the differences in person at our studio, and help you make the right choice before committing to a print run.
